Neck and lower back pain can improve, only to return weeks or months later. When that happens, it’s worth looking beyond the symptoms and considering what may be contributing to the problem.

What Is a Chiropractic Subluxation?

In our chiropractic approach, a subluxation refers to a spinal joint that may not be positioned or moving as well as it should.

Over time, factors such as poor posture, repetitive physical demands, sports injuries, or motor vehicle accidents may contribute to changes in spinal joint position or movement.

This chiropractic use of the term is different from the medical use of subluxation, which generally refers to a partial dislocation of a joint.

How Can Spinal Problems Affect You?

The spine is designed to provide both stability and movement. When a joint isn’t functioning optimally, it may affect how nearby muscles and other structures work together.

In some cases, irritation or compression of a spinal nerve can contribute to symptoms such as pain, tingling, numbness, or weakness that travel along the nerve’s pathway.

However, not every spinal alignment or movement issue compresses a nerve, and not every recurring pain problem is caused by a spinal subluxation.

That’s why a thorough evaluation matters.

Treating More Than the Symptoms

An adjustment may help improve spinal joint movement and address certain mechanical contributors to discomfort. Depending on your individual findings, care may also include specific exercises, posture or movement strategies, and other appropriate therapies.

For some patients, corrective chiropractic care may be considered to address particular spinal movement or alignment concerns over time. The approach should be individualized, with progress reassessed rather than assumed.

Not everyone needs corrective care, and not every spinal curve or alignment difference can—or should—be changed.

The Bottom Line

If your neck or lower back pain keeps returning, it may be time to look more closely at what’s contributing to it.

A comprehensive evaluation can help identify relevant factors and guide a treatment plan based on your symptoms, examination findings, and goals.

Recurring pain deserves more than guesswork. Understanding the possible contributors is an important step toward making informed decisions about your care.
